Web restoration

Web restoration is the process of recovering a site from a valid backup after an incident. Its recovery time (RTO) and acceptable data loss (RPO) must be defined before an incident occurs, not while scrambling to respond to one.

In practice

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum time to bring the site back online; RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum acceptable data loss. An e-commerce site with 200 orders per day may tolerate a 4-hour RPO but requires an RTO of under one hour. Automating restoration with a regularly tested script reduces RTO from several hours to a few minutes.
