XML sitemap

An XML sitemap lists a site’s URLs along with their last-modified date. It does not force indexation but accelerates page discovery, especially on large or recently launched sites where crawlers may not find everything through links alone.

In practice

An honest sitemap beats an exhaustive one: include only indexable pages, with accurate lastmod dates. Falsified dates 'to trigger re-crawling' are eventually disregarded. Beyond a few tens of thousands of URLs, segment by page type — coverage diagnostics become far simpler as a result.
