Pilot unit

The pilot unit is the location or locations operated directly by the franchisor before any network rollout. It serves to test, validate, and document the concept under real conditions, providing the proof of viability required under French franchise disclosure law (loi Doubin).

In practice

A franchisor who has not operated at least one pilot for a sufficient period — generally two to three years — cannot credibly claim to transmit a proven body of expertise. The pilot surfaces operational friction invisible at the design stage: an ill-suited point-of-sale system, a supplier with chronic delivery delays, a site too dependent on summer footfall. These lessons are integrated into the operations manual before the first franchise agreement is signed.
