A prompt is the instruction given to a language model. Its formulation largely determines the quality of the response: context provided, constraints set, format specified, examples included.
In practice
For visibility purposes, understanding user prompts helps in writing for them: the real questions directed at assistants — long, situational, constraint-laden — are the new keyword research. For production purposes, our editorial templates are themselves prompt systems, versioned and tested like code.
